How to Recognize a Qualified Interior Designer

When it comes to choosing an interior designer, you may think that choosing someone is as simple as reviewing designs and going with the person whose style you like the most. But while this is an important part of choosing the best interior designer for your project, there is much more to the process than just that. After all, you wouldn’t hire someone based on their resume alone, would you? Of course not! In order to find an interior designer who is not just talented but who is also qualified to work on your project, you should look for these qualities:

  • Experience – You should look for a designer who has at least five years of experience or a combination of work experience and education. A designer who is fresh out of school obviously wouldn’t be a great choice because his or her methods are untried as of yet. So you definitely want a few years of experience at least.

  • Education – It isn’t necessarily a requirement for interior designers to go to school, but it is advisable to do so. There are many things about interior design that can only be learned in school, so your best bet is going to be someone with a minimum combined experience and education level of seven years.

  • Examinations and / or certifications – In some cases you may find designers who are certified and / or have passed rigorous examinations. These are the designers you should be thrilled to find because they can be more difficult to come by. They are also much busier than untrained designers because their skills are highly sought-after when compared with a new designer without any experience.

  • Knowledge about building requirements – Most people don’t realize just how much architectural and building knowledge is required in interior designers today. They do a whole lot more than just make your space look great. They need to make sure that whatever they do enhances and doesn’t interfere in any way with the construction requirements of the building itself. If they don’t know anything about codes and requirements, then it is time to move on.

  • Creativity – This qualification may seem rather obvious, but creativity can mean different things to different people. This is the point at which you can start looking at style and determining what type of design you want and / or need in your space. Of course creativity also extends to the area of knowledge about building requirements. Part of being creative is finding solutions to design problems so that the look you want does not interfere with the integrity of the building.

  • Easy to work with – Finally, make sure you find someone who will be easy for you to work with. A designer can have all of the qualifications in the world, but if you aren’t a good match on a professional level, then the result will not be great. Find someone who understands what you mean when you talk to them and who will take time to listen to everything you want and need in the space he or she is designing.

Anyone can pick a qualified interior designer if they just look for these qualifications. The same designer won’t be perfect for everyone, but the more you know about what they do, the easier it will be to find someone with the qualifications you need in order to be able to design the space you want.
